The vineyard was brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Greeks who conquered Empúries. From then on it became part of the culture of this land. Today, the wine producing Empordà has more than 420 wine growers who cultivate more than 2,000 hectares of vineyards, with the classic varieties of white and black grapes, the Carignan (Cariñena) red grape and others coming from other wine growing districts which have taken root in the Empordà which are no other than the cabernet, the merlot and the syrah. The more than 40 wineries with Empordà Denomination of Origin produce more than 6,000,000 litres of wine a year, many of which are of a very high quality. We highly recommend a visit to some of the best wineries in the area, to enjoy the vineyard landscape and to taste the quality of their wines.
